Monitoring and Protecting Human Rights under State of Emergency
In early July, 2008, MONFEMNET office found itself at the centre of NGO mobilization to monitor and protect human rights during the State of Emergency announced on the night of July 1st to supposedly end the violent confrontation between the police and citizens. Unprecedented in Mongolia’s post-socialist history, violence erupted following spontaneous mass protests against the results of the 2008 parliamentary elections. On that night and following morning, nearly 800 people were subjected to arbitrary arrests and police brutality.

Urgent Action to Protest Revocation of Women’s Quota (2007-2008)
At the end of 2007, MONFEMNET launched a campaign against the cancellation of the law that required political parties to ensure that at least 30% of candidates for parliamentary elections be female. The law was initially adopted in 2005 due to lobbying by women’s NGOs to improve gender balance at decision making levels.

Media Campaign to Support Victims of Trafficking
In February, 2008, a single mother of three made a public statement that her daughter was kidnapped and forced into prostitution. Democratic women quickly mobilized to support the mother and help find her daughter. As a result, more and more parents began to speak out about the disappearance of their children.
